Stewart Gilray made a number of project announcements at Season 2, Episode 4 of GameCityNights last night, where he spoke about his history in the industry and his thoughts on formal videogame education and qualifications. Lorne Lanning spoke to attendees through the medium of Skype, summarizing the last few years of Oddworld and answering questions from the audience. OddBlog was present for the whole evening, which you can relive through its live tweeting. Gilray made four main announcements.
  1. Because of the time spent fixing bugs present in the Oddboxx’s original release, the release of Stranger’s Wrath HD has been pushed back until the summer. A small number of higher-resolution characters were showcased, but the delay has allowed Just Add Water to include additional features, such as support for PlayStation Move, 3DTV and automatic uploading of gameplay recordings to YouTube. A mysterious ‘Feature X’ was assured, although its reveal had to be censored last-minute. It is ten letters long, starting and ending with ‘s’. In addition, the game’s menus and HUD have been redesigned to more closely match Lorne’s original sketches for them.

  2. Munch’s Oddysee is also being given a HD treatment, with a number of higher-definition characters showcased at GameCityNights. Set to hit the PlayStation Network in October or November this year, this rerelease of MO will bring all four Oddworld titles to simultaneous availability on consoles, specifically the PlayStation 3. That being the case…

  3. The Oddboxx will be coming out on the PlayStation Network. Just like the PC equivalent, it will feature all four Oddworld games, including the HD remasters of Stranger’s Wrath and Munch’s Oddysee, at the same low price!

  4. Perhaps the most exciting announcement is the reveal of Oddworld: The Hand of Odd as a new title for release on platforms to be determined, although Eurogamer reports they are looking at iPad, Android tablets, Facebook, PC and Mac.

    Wielding a large bound copy of the game’s original design documentation (circa 1998), Gilray explained that the modern gaming landscape has encouraged them to imagine Hand of Odd less as a Command & Conquer-style Real-Time Strategy and more like Zynga’s brand of social games.

On the week of March 7th 2011, this budget-priced compilation of award-winning classics will finally launch on IGN D2D, Stardock, Amazon, GamersGate and other services to be announced. To celebrate, there will also be a week-long 50% discounted price sale from the day of release, which will also occur on Steam. The Oddboxx will come complete with a host of extra features added since the game’s launch: Munch’s Oddysee:

  • Stranger’s Wrath:
  • Added Xbox 360 controller support.
  • Fully customizable controls, including 3rd party control pad support.
  • Added support for devices with more than 6 audio channels.
  • Added launcher with multiple resolution and anti-aliasing support.
  • Added widescreen modes.

  • Stranger’s Wrath will receive ADDITIONAL enhancements later this year, to be taken from the forthcoming upgraded PSN version. This includes upgraded models, lighting, UI features and a few surprises still to come.

    Just Add Water has announced their first project working with the Oddworld universe, a remastered digital release of Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath on the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStaion Network. While the game itself will remain exactly the same, it will be updated with higher display resolution, improved character models, remastered audio and support for PlayStation Move. Resolution will be upped from 640×480 to 720p, and character model polygon counts increased from the original Xbox’s 3 000 to 25 000. Dialogue, often criticized for being grainy and low-quality, is having its bitrate doubled from the original 11kHz to 22kHz. Despite media reports that it will be PlayStation 3-exclusive, Lorne Lanning and JAW’s Managing Director Stewart Gilray have confirmed that an Xbox Live Arcade release has not been ruled out but can’t yet be confirmed because of technical and beaurocratic reasons. Stranger’s Wrath was the choice of remaster over Munch’s Oddysee for several reasons, including its lack of middleware dependency and high ratings by critics. It is the first announced of five projects being worked on by JAW and is expected to be released—with French, German, Italian and Spanish subtitles—near Easter 2011. JAW will be publishing a series of developer diaries about the remastering process, with the first part due today.
