The Stranger is the third Oddworld hero to be seen, though not part of the Oddworld Quintology of heroes. He is a no‐nonsense bounty hunter and protector of the Grubbs, feared by many and worshipped by few. He is the last Steef known to exist in the Mongo valley, but until recently he has been hiding that fact to prolong his survival.

Physiology
The Stranger is muscular and powerful. His forearms scatter enemies when he performs his spinning attack, and his head butt can knock Outlaws unconscious. He is also a powerful runner. When reaching high speeds he can drop down onto all four (or all six) to run at 45 miles per hour. At such a velocity, the Stranger acts much like a car but with greater agility and breaking, and a direct ram can knock anyone flying. Unlike other Steef, the Stranger has no horns, but the reasons for this are unknown. He also hides his four legs inside two large boots when interacting with the more narrow‐minded races of the Mongo River area. The Stranger never looks after his oral hygiene. He uses his appalling bad breath to persuade Outlaws to relinquish information. He weighs 260 pounds.

Appearance
Dressed in his bleached hat and tattered boots, Stranger has the appearance of the nomad he is. He is resourceful, and much of his armour and clothing has been picked up and repaired as he moves from town to town. His piercing green eyes and facial hair make him quite handsome and rugged. His faded poncho and trusty crossbow hint at his rich cultural origin.

Psychology
The Stranger was convinced that he needed to integrate with the invasive colonial species that had moved in around the Mongo River in order to avoid being hunted down. This made him a social recluse and loner, far more content in his own company, and comfortable in the dark, forbidding forests and swamps around the Mongo. Sadly, the Stranger was also bitter and twisted, even willing to hunt down other Steef in order to earn the Moolah needed to protect himself. He kept himself satisfied by hunting down scumbag Outlaws preying on Clakker settlements, but still maintaining an emotional and social distance from everyone to protect his identity. His greatest tools in surviving the new and harsh situations he finds himself in are his wit and cunning.

Beyond protecting the Clakkerz, the Stranger cared little for anything other than his own survival. He found the Clakkerz to be incredibly annoying and patronising, barely worth protecting, but he was not above helping them with personal problems, such as teaching Unkle TurkeyToes not to be frightened of Bolamites, or finding Maggie's children. However, it was not until he was rescued by the Grubb and begged to protect them that he discovered his ability to care.

Abilities

The mystery that Stranger keeps about himself serves him well, as it inspires fear in all around him. He exploits this intimidation to his own ends when requiring information or assistance, but when people call his bluff, he can always resort to his physical strength to prove their foolishness (cf. Sky Cart Joe). When pitted against a stronger enemy, the Stranger can just as easily use his speed, dexterity and cunning to outpace, out‐manœuvre or outwit them.

On top of his personal powers, the Stranger carries a custom‐built crossbow at all times. Normally folded up inconspicuously on his right wrist, it springs into shape when he thrusts his arm forwards. It is high‐tension, rapid firing, and able to accommodate almost any kind of ammunition. Stranger's natural harmony with the nature around him allows him to use his favourite arsenal, Live Ammo. Literally shooting small creatures, the Stranger enjoys distracting, shifting and immobilising his targets as much as he does firing to cause damage. When bounty hunting, these skills increase the likelihood of capturing the bounty alive, maximising the reward he is paid.

Story
Early Life
Nothing is known of the Stranger's early life. It is presumed he had some kind of contact with his race, or at least access to their culture, as his legacy shows itself though his faded poncho and custom‐made crossbow. For many years, the Stranger had been hiding his true identity as a Steef from the colonial Clakkerz and Outlaws by working as a bounty hunter, a job he finds a strange satisfaction in. The Clakkerz, curious as to his origins, theorised that he had come from the mountains, or else the river itself. His hidden identity had prevented Grubbs from seeking his help.

Stranger's Wrath
The Stranger wanted an operation to permanently conceal his identity, and was consulting and negotiating with the Doc Vykker. Unfortunately, the Doc's price of 20 000 Moolah was so high that Stranger had to pull out all the stops and bag the bounties of three nearby Clakker towns to earn the Moolah. Unfortunately, while in Buzzarton, the clerk presented him with a bounty for a Steef and put Stranger and Sekto on the fone with each other. Sekto promised Stranger a payment of 20 000 Moolah for a fresh Steef, but then contacted D. Caste Raider, an Outlaw boss, to seek the same Steef.

Knowing there were no wild Steef left in the area, Caste Raider went to Buzzarton and followed the trail of the Stranger until he discovered he was seeking an operation from the Doc. When the Stranger arrived at the Doc's Mongo Retreat, Caste Raider and his gang were lying in wait to ambush him. They knocked him out cold and took him to their hideout. Stripped of his clothes, the Stranger's true nature as a Steef was revealed, but just as D. Caste Raider's gang were preparing to skin him alive, a Grubb raid set the Stranger free, and he escaped from the hideout and through the Clakker town of Dusky Hollow.

His identity now known by all, the Stranger surmised he had no hope of returning to their society and that his only chance at survival was to get to the Mongo's source and destroy Sekto before he could capture Stranger. However, arriving in a Grubb village, he was cheered and applauded for his earlier escape and appearance. The Grubbs promised they had a Steef boat he could use to travel upstream, and after damaging a Wolvark docking station and protecting the village from invasion, he took the boat, promising the Grubbs that he would repel the invaders from Last Legs, the final remaining Grubb stronghold, before seeking out Sekto. Once the Wolvark threat was eliminated, the Grubbs were able to rally their forces and aid Stranger's attack on Sekto Springs Dam.

As flaming rocks were fired upon the dam, Stranger worked his way to Sekto's office atop the construct and confronted him. After his two robotic pet Gloktigi were destroyed, Sekto activated a powerful weapon and shield, but Stranger destroyed its generators and dragged Sekto's body to a hole in the office’s wall to show his off his victory. At that moment, the dam finally began to topple, releasing the water trapped behind it and filling the Mongo River. Approaching the body of Sekto, the Stranger realised it was actually an old Steef guardian who had been controlled by Sekto. Asked by the dying protector if the water was free, Stranger comforted him.

SoulStorm Brew is one of the Magog Cartel’s most important product lines, a highly addictive and slightly toxic drink that is not only Oddworld’s favourite alcoholic beverage, but a powerful tool in the enslavement and suppression of the Mudokons.

Application
The Mudokon race’s enslavement was mainly due to the naïvity of the natives and the addictive properties of SoulStorm Brew. Glukkons would approach the natives and encouraged them to try the Brew, but soon the Mudokons were hooked. In their drunked stupor, they readily agreed to work for the Magog Cartel in return for free SoulStorm Brew. Sure enough, dispensing machines can be found in all Glukkon factories and facilities, at the workplace and in prison cells, to keep the Mudokons dependent on the Cartel’s products. Even then, though, Mudokons have to wait until arbitrary breaks to be allowed to drink. SoulStorm Brew is also used in consumer goods weaponry such as brew repeaters and vending bombs.

SoulStorm Brew sponsors Mudokon Tossing and “A Celebration of Debilitating Addiction”, the exhibition at the Glukkon Museum of Modern Technocracy, and maintains a stronghold on the drinks market through its “The First One’s Free” promotion, in which free samples of Brew are offered to get consumers addicted to the product, ensuring a lifetime’s customer loyalty.

Ingedients
On top of fermented barleys and hops, it is common knowledge that SoulStorm Brew contains bone powder, an ingredient Glukkon physician Doctor Chester Payne claims strengthens one’s own bones. What was not known was that the bones were of Mudokons, taken from work‐related accidents and holy burial sites. When Abe discovered this, he informed F.U.D. T.V., which released news reports of the bones‐brew cover‐up. The other secret ingredient of Brew is Mudokon tears, which gives the drink its trademark smoothness. Additionally, SoulStorm Brew is packed with preservatives that are claimed to keep the drink tasting fresh after a decade. SoulStorm Brew contains 10 000 calories per bottle, 800 grams of sodium, 500 grams of fat, 6 kilograms of sugars, and absolutely no protein or vitamins.

Industry
Mudokon bones are readily available from any and all Glukkon factories through the common work‐related accident. However, after the closure of RuptureFarms 1029 at the hands of the Mudokon terrorist Abe, the Magog Cartel lost its primary source of bones, so SoulStorm Mining Co. began mining operations in Necrum. Bones are taken to the Bonewerkz Mill via Trains to be ground and processed. From here it is transported to SoulStorm Brewery 401 where the ingredients come together. Here, Mudokons are suspended in Tear X-Tractors and continually electrocuted to produce a constant source of Mudokon tears. The SoulStorm Brew industry was crippled when Abe destroyed Necrum Mines, shut down Bonewerkz and blew up SoulStorm Brewery.

Varieties
*Pure Bone Brew
*Cardiac Porter
*Eyewash Stout
*Flail Ale
“It’s totally upchuckalicious!”
*BlitzPacker Brew
BlitzPacker Brew is designed for use in product delivery firearms. Is is packaged in heavier, stronger cans.

Necrum is the Mudokon City of the Dead, a collective burial site for the tribal Mudokons of long ago. The clues to the Mudokons’ lost history that were to be found in Necrum were largely lost due to destructive industrial influences and the retaliation necessary to end the exploitation of Mudokon slaves.

History
Built in an oasis in the desert, Necrum was the final resting place for Mudokons from tribes united in the celebration of death. The burial grounds were protected by a stone perimeter and by Guardians, now‐extinct creatures that warded off enemies of the Mudokons. As the Mudokon race dwindled and suffered at the hands of the Magog Cartel, Necrum was forgotten about.

When Abe shut down RuptureFarms, he unwittingly destroyed the primary source of Mudokon bones, the main secret ingredient in Brew, so the Glukkons turned to Necrum. The Mining Company began mining operations, employing blinded Mudokon slaves to unknowingly excavate their ancestors’ remains. Industry damaged the city ruins and wasted resources so that the surrounding desert slowly encroached on the dying jungle. Heavy machinary and the awakening of lifeless Mudombies disturbed the peace of the Mudokon spirits, who appeared to Abe in a dream and asked him to put and end to the Glukkons’ plot. Sure enough, Abe sabotaged Necrum Mines’ boilers and blew the facility up.

Geography and Architecture
Necrum was a sacred site, populated by grave sites, burial urns, flagstones, totems, towering dwellings for the dead, and numerous temples. Walkways were constructed from Mudokon skulls; doorways were made from the bones of species now long extinct. The entire complex is surrounded by a stone perimeter featuring Mudokon sculptures, columns and portals engineered with great technical skill now lost from the Mudokons’ common knowledge. The jungle oasis in which Necrum is built is home to crooked palms and solitary temples that lead to the vaults below.

The Necrum temple lies at the very heart of the oasis, built into a large tree decorated by Mudokon craftsmanship. By reading the literature of the temple’s story stones, the temple fires are lit, providing to soul access to the creepy Crypt within, where only the most important Mudokons are placed, placed in a standing position in open coffins fixed all around the interior wall. The Glukkons had yet to find this temple. It was in the Crypt that the Weirdos gave Abe the ability to heal Mudokons sick from Brew and taught him about the Glukkon ploys using SoulStorm Brew to enslave the Mudokons.

Necrum Vaults
Underneath Necrum are hidden vaults that were once the private burial grounds of only the most heroic Mudokons from the Mudomo and Mudanchee tribes. Each has become overrun by Paramites and Scrabs respectively, once meant to guard over the bones of their worshippers, but now left to fend for themselves. They have managed to build mysterious constructions that seem too engineered to come from wild animals. Inside the Cryptoons of the Mudomo vaults, dying Paramites cocoon themselves in finely spun webbing, neatly reinforced with wooden splints. In the Scrabacombs of the Mudanchee vaults, dying Scrabs create spires honouring their dead before adding their own remains to the walls of beak bones.

Glukkons invaded the vaults with the intention of mining the sacred bones buried within, but progress was slow due to the unexpected infestations of Scrabs and Paramites. Superstitious Sligs have placed ghost locks throughout the vaults to trap wandering Mudokon spirits; the Weirdos wanted Abe to release the captured souls, which he did. The grateful spirits rewarded Abe by unlocking temple doors and granting him limited periods of invisibility. In the Mudanchee vaults, the Glukkons planned on opening Scrab-O-Rama, a hunting preserve for the removal of the Scrabs.

Necrum Mines
Carved out of the Mudokons’ ancient burial grounds, the mines were an uncharted and ongoing excavation reaching deep down underneath Necrum. Dimly lit and poorly serviced, twisted corridors led Mudokon miners—blinded by the Glukkons for fear that they would refuse to dig up the bones of their own dead—to new pockets of mortal remains. The deepest shafts broke into long‐forgotten subterranean realms, home to creatures long considered extinct. The mines were destroyed when Abe sabotaged their five boilers simultaneously, but not before the entire mining staff were rescued. The mines were connected to the Depot to transport the bones to the Bonewerkz.

The Paramonian Temple lies at the heart of Paramonia, built around the Paramites’ nesting site to test the nerves and abilities of Mudokons. It is built like a gigantic tepee with petrified wooden timbers, long enough to span the temple’s height, from its rock base to its truncated top. Vines are wound together, tying the massive structure together. Wooden lintels retain its shape, and protrude from the outer wall like moss‐covered tusks. Tree trunks are used as columns, and are intricately carved in ways too advanced for modern Mudokons to replicate. The approach to the temple is suspended high above the forest floor and is marked by erected sticks, signifying Mudokon graves, and a set of impressive wooden gateways.

The inside of the temple has been desiccated by the industrialists. Sligs and their Slogs still guard walkways and the holy fires that were extinguished years ago before being relit by Abe. Routes are booby trapped at every turn with falling rocks, rolling boulders, dead ends, crystal‐activated shadow locks and huge swinging pendulums. Meat sacks are liberally placed, offering chunks of meat to distract Paramites with. The damp, dark environment has encouraged the Paramites to construct vast webs and cocoons.

Paramonia is an anicent, rapidly‐vanishing coniferous forest region. It is the natural habitat of Paramites, but today is under siege from timber clear‐cutting initiatives and wildlife hunting. Paramites are shot and herded into boxcars for slaughter in the Magog Cartel’s meat‐processing factories like RuptureFarms, and today the only chance of seeing one is to venture within the Paramonian Temple, where they still nest.

Mudokon tribes have long since disappeared from the area, but Mudokons do still come here to preserve what they can, particularly the trials that were designed to pit the Mudokon saviour against hardship. Facilities and landscaping remain: rock formations are bridged by timber tied with vines, but many platforms are not joined, designed instead to be traversed only on Elumback. Well networks join Paramonia with Monsaic Lines, and are made of prehistoric skins stapled with leather. The same skins form tartpaulins around tunnel entrances and the sails of windmills. Hollow tree trunks are used as ladders. The technology needed to build these engineering marvels is long‐forgotten by the Mudokons.

The Monsaic Lines are the holy caves of the Mudokons. Long ago they were attended by devout Mudokons and those that belonged to cults and secret societies as a way to explore their culture and spirituality. Today, while its original purpose remains, it is used as a tool to help Mudokons corrupted by the ways of the industrial world to discover their legacy and learn to cooperate with nature. Mudokons that are rescued from slavery by bird portals are first taken to the Monsaic Sanctum, hidden within the caverns.

The structure of Monsaic Lines consists of a large number of individual land masses held together only by a massive system of plant roots. Below everything is a large water reservoir that makes the air humid, allowing rock faces to become overgrown with mosses. The cave walls are decorated with ancient rock art that communicates with the modern day, and huge statues carved in stone dominate the views, of Elums, Scrabs, Paramites and even Mudokons, such as the two praying figures that guard the entire to Monsaic Lines. The age‐old foretelling of prophets are inscribed within story stones. Every piece of art is preserved by Shamans.

Even today, the Lines remain virtually untouched by industrial forces, only the occasional Slig finding itself lost. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, heightened by the background music of chanting Mudokons.

Ridley:

Described as “a vast multi‐species conglomerate dedicated to creating and producing the finest consumer goods on the market” (Humphrey Vykkers ‘IGN vs. The Vykkers’, October 2001) Vykkers Conglomerate is truly a massive corporate power, six billion Moolah strong and long having served its billionth customer from its broad‐ranging catalogue of products. The organisation alternates between being a business ally and a corporate enemy of the Magog Cartel, switching sides to give itself the best opportunity to penetrate new markets.

It is well‐known that Vykkers Conglomerate conducts animal testing in the research and development of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nicotines, food and food additives. This has earned it a degree of notoriety amongst the native and environmentalist populations of Oddworld. When the family reinvested profits to launch Vykkers Labs as free‐floating impenetrable fortresses, it was able to ignore threats from such groups and expand its influence and income dramatically.

Facilities
The architecture of the Vykkers’ laboratories and research facilities is defined by its gothic ornamentation in rusting iron, insectoid shapes and bloated gas‐filled balloons. Like the Glukkons, the Vykkers design all their constructions to feature their stylised facial shapes, creating instant brand recognition. Vykkers Labs 13 was the first facility of the Conglomerate to be entirely free floating and has since become synonymous with the Vykkers, though they are also known to operate underground and submarine research facilities. Interiors are built with purple brickwork and padded walls, and illuminated orange and purple windows and lights.

Products
While their catalogue of consumer goods is diverse and broad, Vykkers’ most profitable markets are in designer pharmaceuticals, fine processed foods, and various technology used throughout industrial society. Its flagship enterprise, Vykkers Labs, has a dominant role in the Consumer Pharmaceutical Division. Currently topping their successful portfolio of products is the new Butt‐Flo Chunky Style, replacing the easy‐out chlorine‐laxatives’ older ‘Splatter Formula’. Vykkers Conglomerate’s success in the market has been attributed to the practice known as ‘product linking’ in which one item literally creates demand for another by subtly creating new symptoms for the customer. As an example, the sweetener Gum‐Rot ensures a lifetime’s custom for disposable dentures.

Vykkers Conglomerate products include, but are not limited to:
*Babychow
A labour‐saving baby food additive packed with calories and trans‐fatty acids to reduce the time spent feeding children, turning “Toddler into a Waddler.” Babychow was tested by spoon feeding Fuzzles like Tiny into morbid obesity.
*Butt‐Flo
The Vykkers’ brand of ‘easy‐out’ chlorine‐based laxatives, designed to clear the bowels rapidly before board meetings. Known to contain high levels of pink polyester fibres and trans‐fatty gloop globues, when tested on Fuzzles, Butt‐Flo cleared their insides out permanently. The out‐dated ‘Splatter Formula’ has recently been replaced by the ‘Chunky Style’ to prompt even more customers to “Get with the Flow.”
*Chill Pill
Dubbed “Happiness! Now in a convenient tablet form,” this sedative is known to cause cramps, bloating, swelling of the joints and extreme diarrhoea. Instructions are to take an 18 000mg time‐release tablet with 4 gallons of water or more promptly before bedtime. Munch highlighted the tale of Stoner, a lively Fuzzle who now can’t close his eyes, to encourage the boycott of Chill Pill.
*Gum‐Rot
An artificial sweetener highly advertised to children, Gum‐Rot can practically dissolve tooth enamel. The Fuzzle Sasha was force fed 7 000 teaspoons a day for weeks on end.
*LungBuster Cigs
Bypassing the problem of disguising the carcinogenic qualities of smokeables, Vykkers Labs advertises its LungBuster brand as an alternative to growing old, ugly and crotchety. LungBuster is also used in the field of product delivery firearms and are the ammunition for Cigarette Rifles and Stoggie Blasters.
*Headburn Shampoo
Originally marketed as a ‘shampoo brightener’, this thoroughly‐tested product burned holes in customers’ heads. It was rebranded as Headburn Shampoo.
*Bounce
This novelty gum bestows rubbery properties on consumers for a limited timeframe.
*Zap
A powerful sports drink, which allows Munch to release electrical discharges from his SkullJack. Ice lollies were marketed under the same name.
*Expresso
A brand of hyper‐caffeinated espresso coffee that produces a temporary hyperactivity.
*Invisible
A chaser that turns the drinker invisible for a short period. Klime A java coffee that allows the drinker to walk up walls.
*B‐Betterz
A health tonic.
*Gabbiar
A fine delicacy comprising raw Gabbit eggs that have shot up in value since the near‐extinction of the Gabbit species. The very last can of Grade A Gabbiar was auctioned off at Vykkers Labs and won by Lulu at a cost of 3 000 000 Moolah, his entire fortune. He subsequently lost the can when it was stolen by Abe and Munch.
*Sam’s Labour Eggs
The Vykkers have Sam, the Mudokon Mum, in chains for the mass production of Mudokon Eggs to be hatched into slavery. Labour Eggs are distributed under the Slave Aid label.
*Snoozers
Robotic nursemaids used to tend to experiments by remote control. The Glukkons use them to guard their factories and raid Mudokon villages. *Greeters
Designed by Vykkers as robotic salesmen, Greeters tended to electrocute potential customers, so they were placed in factories as security features.
*Fleeches
Genetically manipulated pets.
*Gabbit Juice
*Gabbit Protein Shakes
*Gabbit Skin Oils
*Gabbit Skin Waterproof Luggage
*Home Cosmetic Surgery Kits
In Mudokon mythology, it is a dualistic god representing creation and destruction, fear and love, but above all else it is the Mudokon god of vengeance and possesses the spirit of the sacred beasts. Mudokons like Abe that complete the Big Face’s trials in Paramonia and Scrabania are granted hand scars that allow them to bring Shrykull into their souls when using certain bird portals, transforming them into half‐Mudokon, half‐God beasts that have incredible destructive power.

Lulu is a pathetic Glukkon. Although like all Glukkons he is devoted to profit in his mind, Lulu is well‐known for his laziness, neglegence and complete lack of business mindedness. He is the stupidest Glukkon alive, derided even by the universally‐empathic Raisin. He worked in an outlying slaughterhouse under the immediate supervision of Sask, the son‐in‐law of the boss. His office was in the dimly‐lit basement, and he spent his time sleeping, drinking and reading girly magazines.

The reasons for his infamy reversed when he became a puppet to the exploits of Abe and Munch. Under the control of Abe he founded Lulu’s Fund, a bogus charity with all proceeds going directly to him, which just happened to prosper as various Glukkon entrepreneurs and CEOs were forced by Abe to donate their entire bank accounts. Lulu’s fame skyrocketed along with his fortune in the space of a day, and he was immediately named Glukkon of the Year by Slime magazine. Being dimwitted, he genuinely believed he had achieved his success, swiftly becoming a Glockstar and invited to Vykkers Labs in time for its Gabbiar Auction.

Despite hating Gabbiar, Lulu bid his entire fortune on the last can of Gabbiar while possessed by Abe and was instantly ruined, his purchase easily stolen by Abe and Munch. He was last seen begging for Moolah on the city streets, all blame for the destruction of Vykkers Labs being laid on him. It was rumored he would end up taking control of the abandoned 1029, but the possibility of this happening ended when he lost his wealth.

Appearance
Lulu even lacked the dress sense to match a suit and tie, but usually wore his shirt and pants, braces and pen holder until his success story when he began wearing standard purple suits. He is ugly even by Glukkon standards, with buck teeth, small yellow eyes, a tiny head and large upper lip.
However, he failed to consider the possibility that Munch would use his ability to open Fuzzle cages to free Fuzzles and fight for their cause. Clakkerz are a species on Oddworld that inhabits Western Mudos. They are settlers who have built towns around the Mongo River and mine for Grubb artefacts, but are frequently berated by Outlaws. In Oddworld Stranger’s Wrath they are both comic relief and initial allies of Stranger, paying him Moolah to bounty Outlaws.

History
Inspired by tales of unlimited prosperity, Clakkerz migrated west during their Expansion Period. It’s not known if they intentionally settled to occupy the Mongo River and its surroundings or if it was just where their trailers broke down. Nor is it clear whether the Mongo was already drained when the Clakkerz first reached the area, although the presence of large towns so close to the current water table suggests it was.

Many Clakker settlements were irreversibly flooded when the Grubbs destroyed Sekto Springs Dam, and the subsequent extent of Clakker habitation is not known.

Production history
Clakkerz were inspired by American and Australian settlers who didn’t care about the disastrous impact their migration was having on native peoples. To Lorne Lanning they were characterized by condescending elitist attitudes and conservative thought. Their design as birds comes from a postcard Lanning saw in a nature store, depicting ‘an angry as hell looking bald eagle’, which was given to the Clakkerz’ designer Silvio Aebischer as visual inspiration along with the instruction that they should ‘retain absurdity and goofball qualities’. These were sought by modelling Clakkerz on chickens for their being annoying and funny while familiar to the audience. Clakkerz were also shaped by other farm animals, namely pigs, because of their banal lives.

Clakkerz were first seen by the public in the trailer for The X Factor: Inside Microsoft’s Xbox and subsequently in the special itself. Members of the Oddworld Forums started refering to them as Hickens (a portmanteau of ‘chicken’ and ‘hick’ coined by RoN_Rancor), but their official name (a portmanteau of ‘cluck’ and ‘cracker’) was revealed on the official website in a Q&A with Lanning.

Vykkers are the cruel, cold-hearted doctors and scientists of Oddworld. Almost all Vykkers are involved in research, typically animal testing. Their industrial family is called the Vykkers Conglomerate.

Psychology
Sadists by nature, Vykkers love inflicting pain on other beings, and have a exceedingly low awareness of the perceptions of others. They are documented as being the only major industrial family on Oddworld not to savour Moolah itself. Instead, they see it merely as a means to fund their twisted research. The Vykkers may have developed their scientific knowledge originally to extend their own lifespans far beyond what nature intended (Vykkers can live to 120 years old), but their favourite specialised subjects today are genetic modification and vivisection.

Vykkers' love of pain also includes masochism, and yet Vykkers themselves have a very low pain tolerance: when one is introduced to suffering, he becomes a screaming coward. They retain their aversion to empathy—even their love for each other is not for companionship, but a mechanism for the preservation of their sick business practices.

Physiology
Physically, Vykkers' complexions are haunting: their decrepid bodies are the result of years of life-extending surgery and drug-treatment. Crinkled skin blemished with solar lentigimes hangs loosely off a bulbous head and hollowed face, stretched to tranparency. Four spindly arms handle an array of complicated and menacing equipment and three stumpy legs are plastered with bloody stitches. Vykkers suffer from varicose veins and poor eyesight. Industrial families often joke that Vykkers give even Glukkons the heebie-jeebies.

The socialites among the Vykkers race base their system of status on body manipulation: skin grafts and limb amputations are popular among the higher classes. Vykkers who manage relations between the Conglomerate and other industrial races (cf. Headley the Auctioneer) improve their standing by dressing up in more widely acceptable ways: formal dress is a typical self-absorbing pleasure.

History
When Vykkers first entered the Industrial society of Oddworld, they were dismayed to find that their favourite pastime was illegal, and set about legalising animal cruelty. They established a scientific community and began serving Khanzumerz pharmaceuticals and technology, the development of which they ensured necessitated animal testing. Vykkers evolved from arborial creatures, and today they still feel comfortable at heights, hence the development of their flying vessels and floating faccilities.

Status
Before their careers begin, Vykkers are educated by chemistry sets sent away for from comic books. While social status is determined by body manipulation, the occupation hierearchy within the Vykkers Conglomerate is not.
*Medical Technician
The lowest grade in a Vykker's medical career.
*Doctor
You know what one of these is.
*Surgeon
The highest grade a medical Vykker can become.
*Scientist
An unarmed Vykker researcher.
*Sawbones
A Vykker weilding a sharp blade such as a Lil' Hacker.
*Shot Doc
A Vykker armed with a gun, typically a SnUzi.

Abe is the original and first hero of the Oddworld Quintology, branded the messiah of his people and the saviour of Oddworld. Once content to the life of slavery he was hatched into, Abe now fights against the extortionate corporate families of Oddworld and liberates his Mudokon brothers from slavery and oppression, from his unborn breathren to his deceased ancestors. 15 years old, his full name is Abraham Lure.

Lifestyle
Currently Abe is the social leader of the Free Mud Party, the Mudokons' uprising against their captors, the Magog Cartel, sometimes termed Abe's Marching Mudokons. Usually he follows the suggestions and instruction of religious and spiritual figures like the Raisin and the Weirdos, usually operating alone but occassionally aided by a band of his friends called Abe's Crew, including his best friend Alf. More recently, though, he has been accompanied by the Gabbit Munch after finding out their destinies lie together.

The typical model of Abe's success is to infiltrate a Glukkon factory or other faccility and sabotage it from the inside, with the assistance of the Scrubs working inside. He may shut down the power supply, explode the boilers or reservoirs of fuel, or possess the CEO and simply drain the company’s funds. Before he completes this, Abe makes sure to liberate the slaves. Noramlly Abe concerns himself with his Mudokon brothers, both those currently employed and the unhatched eggs of those that will be norn into slavery, but he has been persuaged by ghosts to take care of the souls and remains of the long-deceased.

Currently, Abe is appeciating a vaccation in Necrum, as ordered by the Raisin, but is expressing sadness at the imprisonment of the Mudokon mother Sam.

Psychology
Abe is a Mudokon and has all the usual mental capacity that brings: he is slow-witted, lazy and optimistic. He also lacks imagination, logic, intelligence and confidence. His primary mental aid is his powerful sense of morality, and in experiencing more and more of the injustices performed both against and by his people he attains the motivation and sheer dedication he needs to rise up to his role as the Mudokon messiah. He can become resourceful and cunning when faced with a challenge, even able to hack into security features such as those found in RuptureFarms' ball cars. He is a determined paccifist, strongly opposed to any kind of violence, and strives to avoid confrontations and apply more stealthy tactics. While deeply sadened by his plight, he remains hopeful and optimistic. Some accuse him of being a dreamer, but Abe unashamedly draws no line between reality and fantasy.

Physiology
Abe weighs 92 lbs and is 5' 8" tall. Just like other Mudokons, he is equal parts clumbsy and nimble. His large hands and feet make his step heavy and his posture poor, but he can expertly scale walls with his bare paws and leap almost gracefully between travel wells—sometimes. He has a tendency to fall down cliffs and pits. Abe is easily discernable amongst a crowd of fellow Mudokons, for his skin is blue (or rather, a purplish-green), his eyes are bloodshot, and he keeps his ponytail tied up and his lips sewn together. He retains his lip stitches as a reminder of his past, motivation for the present, and a kind of medal of honour despite the demeaning nickname of Stitch Lips he endures. His skin is covered by three mystical tattoos that grow over his body gradually: one on the back of each hand and one on his chest, granted to him by the Big Face and the Weirdos respectively.

Psionics
Abe's arsenal consists of his supernatural mental abilities. His most important power is that of possession: Abe can enter the mind of any creature of reasonable intelligence (though he dispells this limitation constantly) and control their actions. This allows him to make use of whatever power or resources that character has, employ the assistance of his victim’s friends or work colleagues, and clear safe paths. While to begin with depossession usually resulted in an explosive end to the possessee, Abe has been able to refine his touch and leave much less destructively. He has also been improving his degree of control, allowing him much greater likelihood of influencing the societies he spies on. Recently he was gifted with the ability to form possession orbs by the Almighty Raisin, a ball of consciousness that allows Abe to scout the area for a short period of time, whereas before he could only do this by possessing his own farts.

The tattoos that Abe wears imbue him with other powers, but usually these are only options to him when circumstances allow. Grateful Mudokon spirits have gifted him with invisibility for short periods, transformation into the Mudokon god Shrykull comes from the occassional special bird portal, and helper Mudokons do grant Abe with spirit rings and healing power should he need them.

Story
Early Life
Abe was hatched from one of Sam's Labor Eggs in the nursery of 1029; like others before and around him, his lips were sewn together to prevent him from speaking (though Alf tells us that Abe was a particularly noisy baby), and he was raised into slavery (possibly by a Foster Slig as Alf was), but completely oblivious of any other way of life. His signed employee manual was later discovered in mint condition and put on auction. He worked as a Floor Waxer, First Class for 15 years before he was awarded with the title "Employee of the Year", then uncovered a secret Glukkon business strategy to succeed in a failing market.

Abe's Oddysee
Working late at RuptureFarms, Abe passed a advertisement billboard for the upcoming latest product in the Tasty Treats line of snacks, and succumbed to curiosity by eavesdropping the factory's annual board meeting. Since wildlife resources were becoming depleted, his boss—Molluck the Glukkon—decided to turn to a readily available source of meat, the Mudokon slaves that worked in the factory. Understandably panicked, Abe instantly took flight and escaped from his workplace by hiding in a barrel on a production line, then evading the sharp-eyed security surrounding RuptureFarms. No sooner had he passed the outer most perimeter did he discover what is now known as Abe's Moon, a large moon whose face bears the shape of a Mudokon paw. Raising his hand to it, the cliff edge beneath his feet crumbled, and Abe fell to the ground beneath, smashed his skull and died.

His body was approached by the Mudokons' spiritual leader, the Big Face, who resurrected Abe and told him how the Mudokon race once lived freely with nature before they were enslaved by the Glukkons, and how their sacred animals were the very same ones being captured, slaughtered and processed to manufacture Tasty Treats. He then revealed that prophecies foretold of a saviour who would appear, and that to test his worth he would be sent to the nesting sites of the Paramites and the Scrabs to relight the holy flames that were extinguished by the Glukkons. With the aid of his pet Elum, Abe traversed the forest and the desert to reach each temple in turn, and after completing the trials of each was invited to the initiation ceremonies, in which the backs of each hand were scarred with mystic tattoos.

With both hand scars, Abe was able to invoke the power of the Mudokon god Shrykull and infiltrate his former workplace, RuptureFarms, where he evaded heightened security measures to rescue every last fellow slave through bird portals. Abe broke into the board room and killed the entire board of executives before finally being captured by Slig security and taken to a holding cell, where he had enough time to pour over the last day before facing execution. Luckily, his good actions had impressed the holy Mudokons, who fired energy beams at Molluck and his assistant. Big Face then teleported Abe to the Monsaic Sanctum, where he received a hero's welcome from the Mudokons he had rescued.

Munch's Oddysee
Accomplishments

His large hands and feet make his step heavy and his posture poor, but he can expertly scale walls with his bare paws and leap almost gracefully between travel wells—?sometimes.

Ridley:

Travellers are warned to watch their step as Slurgs' gaseous bodies emit a high‐pitched squeak when squashed, waking up any nearby Fleeches. It is joked that Slurgs actually steer themselves underfoot.
*Big Bro
Sligs can give their careers a real boost by getting injected with steroids and becoming soldier‐class Big Bro Sligs.

Ridley:

Outlaws will do anything to make Moolah, just so long as it breaks the law. Found terrorising Clakker settlements in Western Mudos, these ornary brutes operate from their ramshackle hideouts, usually stolen property of the Clakkerz. Typical avenues of income include charging townsfolk for “protection” or a natural resource they’ve managed to seize, selling stolen native artefacts, poaching and thieving.

Bosses
Boss Outlaws have proven themselves to be more cunning than other Outlaws (a meagre feat), and now claim a gang as their own. The biggest bosses in the Mongo Riverbasin also answer to Sekto, who pays them to do his bidding. Bosses in Western Mudos include:

*Blisterz Booty, notrious poacher
*Filthy Hands Floyd, train robber
*The Looten Duke, water theif
*Boilz Booty, huntsman
*Jo' Mamma, excavator parent
*Meagly McGraw, noted Opple conneseuir
*[[Packrat Palooka], engineer and hacker
*Flint "X'Plosives McGee", obsessive compulsive digger
*Lefty Lugnutz, Sleg poacher
*Elboze Freely, explosive pyromaniac
*Fatty McBoomBoom, wrastling fan
*D. Caste Raider, hired hunter

Minions
Minions carry out their bosses’ dirty work and protect them fiercely. They come armed in various different manners:
*Cutters
Carrying only brass blades, these tiny minions are adept at close-range combat. Cleever McMince is a Cutter.
*Shooters
Much more trained than most Outlaws, Shooters carry a gun that doubles as a pickaxe-like melle weapon.
*Nailers
These muscle-pumping worked-out minions wear complete body armour, including spiked brass gauntlets that pack a real punch. They are slow and lumbering but can build up enough momentum to send others flying. Nilsworth "Pokey" O'Shafster and Tiny are Nailers.
*Mortars
Equipped with long-range, arcing mortar cannon backpacks, these Outlaws are neurotic recluses that keep far from the front line. They hate interpersonal contact and team sports, but love bodily functions. Their mortars are heat-seeking. Mortimar Bang and Shorty are Mortars.
*Snipers
Shooters that carry sniper rifles also shoot from afar but are far more accurate in their aim.
*Suicide Bombers
These insane minions seek the ultimate thrill and come at you laced with H4D explosives. Snapps Manic is a Suicide Bomber.
*Cyborg Semi Auto
Fast-firing Outlaw Semi Auto have been mechanically upgraded by Packrat Palooka to give them incredible speed and strength.
*Cyborg Flamethrowers
Built by Packrat as his premier henchmen, flamethrower-weilding robotically-enhanced Outlaws are built to be strong and mean. Gunter "Sparky" VonFahrenheiten is a Flamethrower.
*Hunters
Snipers wearing infra-red goggles lurk in the Mongo Forest.

Technology
The Outlaws use a range of technologies in their unlawful schemes. Asides from the weaponry they buy from retailers or construct themselves, they are known to enjoy operating heavy machinary such as cranes, forklifts, bulldozers and pile drivers. The source of this technology isn't known. Their facilities use the same lifts and mine carts that Clakkers use, and the same activator panels that both Clakkerz and Wolvarks use. Some Outlaw types, typically Semi Auto and Flamethrowers, have large parts of their body removed and replaced with machinery. Packrat Palooka is known to do this to produce his premier henchmen, while Elboze Freely seems to be a fully functioning cyborg.

*[[Boilz Booty, huntsman
*Jo' Mamma, excavator parent
*Meagly McGraw, noted Opple conneseuir
*[[Packrat Palooka], engineer and hacker
*Flint "X'Plosives McGee", obsessive compulsive digger
*Lefty Lugnutz, Sleg poacher
*Elboze Freely, explosive pyromaniac
*Fatty McBoomBoom, wrastling fan
*D. Caste Raider, hired hunter

Minions
Minions carry out their bosses’ dirty work and protect them fiercely. They come armed in various different manners:
*Cutters
Carrying only brass blades, these tiny minions are adept at close-range combat. Cleever McMince is a Cutter.
*Shooters
Much more trained than most Outlaws, Shooters carry a gun that doubles as a pickaxe-like melle weapon.
*Nailers
These muscle-pumping worked-out minions wear complete body armour, including spiked brass gauntlets that pack a real punch. They are slow and lumbering but can build up enough momentum to send others flying. Nilsworth “Pokey” O’Shafster and Tiny are Nailers.
Gunter “Sparky” VonFahrenheiten is a Flamethrower.

The source of this technology isn’t known. Their facilities use the same lifts and mine carts that Clakkers use, and the same activator panels that both Clakkers and Wolvarks use. Some Outlaw types, typically Semi Auto and Flamethrowers, have large parts of their body removed and replaced with machinery. Packrat Palooka is known to do this to produce his premier henchmen, while Elboze Freely seems to be a fully functioning cyborg.

Samuel Thompson (born March 17 1989), better known by his screen name Splat is an Oddworld fan from England and moderator of the Oddworld RPG and Fan-Corner sections of the Oddworld Forums. He enjoys reading and writing fiction and table-top RPGing with friends. He is a practising Christian.

Oddworld fan history
Splat was first introduced to Oddworld in 2000 when his sister showed him a demo-version of Abe's Exoddus. Taken with the atmosphere and original design of the game, Splat received the full version of the game on his birthday the following year. After first getting internet access in early 2002, Splat soon searched for Oddworld-related sites and discovered Oddworld Forums through Oddworld.au.com. After lurking a while, he joined the website in October 2002.

Splat has written several fan-fictions based on Oddworld, starting in 2002 and reaching to the present day.

Despite being an avid Oddworld fan since first playing Abe's Exoddus, he did not get a copy of Abe's Oddysee until June 2007, at the same time he bought the Oddworld Art Book.

Splat attended OddTour 4a and 4b in London in 2010.

Oddworld Forums
Splat joined Oddworld Forums in October 2002, mainly to post his fan-fictions and to post his opinions on other peoples'. He later began posting in General Discussion but has never posted steadily there. Fan Corner remained his area of main activity until early 2005, when he was encouraged to try RPGing by T-nex. He joined Work at Rupture Farms on his birthday that year and remained active in the thread until its end in 2010.

Splat made simple comics for the threads, 'Who wants to make a comic' and 'Wars of the Art' in Non-Oddworld Art and Literature, and hosted the second instalments of both of these threads. He later made a series of comics illustrating Mod Survivor Island, in which he drew the deaths of every participant except himself.

Splat began posting his last fan-fiction on Oddworld Forums in 2007 - a multi-part story called 'The Despicable' which tells the stories of several of his characters from the 'Work at Rupture Farms' RPG. The story is currently unfinished and on hiatus, and is by far the longest story Splat has written.

Member of Staff
Following T-nex's decision to leave the forums (and her post as moderator of RPG) in June 2006, Splat was made moderator of Oddworld RPG and Fan-Corner. He developed the RPG Licence system first established by T-nex, and later helped Havoc revamp the rules of Fan-Corner. Since 2009, he has organised five competitions in Fan-Corner for fan-fiction and fan-art. In 2010, Splat turned down an offer to become Super-Moderator of Zulag 2.

Splat has been a participant in all three Mod Survivor Island threads and has consistently come in third place.

Slogs are carnivorous animals on Oddworld used as guard animals by the Glukkons because of their aggression and viciousness. They are domesticated industrial creatures, and given proper training they are obedient to Sligs.

Slogs appear in Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus, Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee, Oddworld Adventures, Oddworld Adventures 2, and Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee for the Game Boy Advance. Young Slogs (Sloggies) appear in Abe’s Exoddus and Munch’s Oddysee. Giant Slogs appear only in Munch’s Oddysee. The only game they haven’t appeared in is Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, which features the closely related species Slegs.

Biology
Slogs are red-skinned, typically weigh 80 pounds (35 kg) and stand 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) tall when fully grown, although exceptionally large Slogs, as tall as 6 foot (180 cm), have been seen in underground caves. All have two hind legs but no forelimbs, yet appear to have no problems with balance whether they are standing, walking, running, pouncing, jumping, or even sleeping (which they do on their feet). Infant Slogs, or Sloggies, are much smaller, run more slowly, and can’t jump as high, but in every other way they are just as deadly as adult Slogs.

Slogs have large mouths lined with sharp incisors (12 maxillary, 10 mandibular). Their lower jaw is fused, while their hinged upper jaw’s pivot point must raise vertically for their mouths to open, giving them a gaping appearance. Their head is fringed by a kind of bony crest or crown that grows upwards from the back of their neck. They also have a stubby tail.

Slogs do not have any direct vision, making it easy to lure them into minefields,5 but are known to have senses of smell and hearing despite having no visible nostrils or ears. They also drool.

Behaviour
Slogs are described as pathologically temperamental, a condition that seems to emerge because of the brutal way they are raised by Sligs. Given the right conditions, they will attack anything, although they only ever turn on each other in self defence (for example, if Abe possesses one and attacks another). They normally ignore working Mudokons unless they are intstructed to ‘Get ’im!’ by a Slig, possibly because they are trained not to kill workers wherever possible. However, Mudokon that so much as stands up will instantly be turned upon. Worker Sligs are normally safe from attack, unless a Slog is ordered by another Slig to attack it. Slogs readily attack Glukkons, Meep, Flying Sligs (which they confuse for frisbees), and Gabbits.

Slogs will stand patiently, always with their mouth open, if they are not given any orders or things to chase. Sometimes they will be tetchy, barking and growling, but they are always ready to attack. Sometimes they will display signs of aggression before they actually give chase, such as barking and snapping towards the provoker. Sometimes they will stand having rocks or verbal taunts thrown at them before they give chase, or wait until their prey is very close, but once they start chasing there is little that will stop them. They will often run right into land mines, electric walls, meat saws, and deadly drops when they are focused on giving chase. If their prey is up on a higher platform they can’t reach, they will will leap up at it snapping their jaws at the air. If it’s on a lower level they can’t get down to, they will run back and forth on the floor above the prey.

Slogs can be distracted by only two things. If they hear a Slig ordering ‘Here boy!’, they will give up chasing or eating and walk alongside the Slig. If a bone is thrown to a place they can get to it, they will up to it and eat it before resuming their attack. The only time this isn’t true is when the Slogs are emerging from a Slog hut, when they will attack the nearest thing to them.

While Slogs are not upset by Mudokon chanting, they do whimper in fear or pain when a spirit ring passes them.

Breeds
There are several breeds of Slog, including the Bird Slog, the Hot Slog, the Hound Slog, the Muddish Setter, and the Snoop Sloggy. The Vykkers Conglomerate has conducted experiments into sensory deprivation on Slogs in the sewers of Vykkers Labs 13, resulting in a variety of Sewer Slog. These have developed acute senses and are much more vicious than regular Slogs.

Slogs in other societies
Slogs in industrial society
Glukkons use Slogs as security guards because of their ferocious temperament. They can be left on their own in remote areas and trusted to attack any trespasser or wayward employee. They will follow Sligs on patrol and obey their commands such as ‘Here boy!’ or ‘Get ’im!’. They are never kept on a leash, but may be chained to a stake. When they’re not sleeping, they’re always alert for anything they can chase, and they make short work of anything they catch. Large factories like RuptureFarms 1029 and Brewery 401 have kennels housing hundreds of Slogs.

Slogs undergo intensive training to become as ruthless as they are. They are starved6 and regularly beaten from an early age to foster an aggressive attitude, while training them to fear, respect and be obedient to Sligs. Sloghuts are used exclusively for the training of Slogs, and the untrained Slogs inside may happily attack Sligs. It is said that a Slog is a Slig’s best friend and that there is nothing more wholesome than the relationship between them, but even though Sligs naturally love any kind of power over other creatures, they only work with Slogs because they are paid to.6

Wolvarks also use Slogs as security animals. Specially trained Sloghandlers keep large numbers of the creatures in an oversized backpack, and unlike Sligs will take Slogs on a leash. Slogs are used by the Vykkers Conglomerate as laboratory animals. The Vykkers were conducting experiments into sensory deprivation on Slogs in the sewers of Vykkers Labs 13.

Alf supposed that if Slogs are a super species, the queen or queens would be kept locked up by the Glukkons.

In native society
Slogs were once kept as loyal pets by the Mulletokon tribe of southern Mudos. When this Mudokon tribe was wiped out by the Glukkons, their Slogs went unfed and became malnourished. The Daily Deception Online reports it is hypothesized that this is the cause of Slogs’ modern temperament, possibly to mislead readers from suspecting the brutal ways Slogs are raised. Mudokons do not currently use Slogs, although Abe has learnt to possess them.
Paramites are terrestrial predators that normally live in Oddworld’s forests and caves, and are known for their social nature, which includes pack hunting and vocal communication. Glukkons hunts them for their meat, but they are sacred creatures to the Mudokons, who in turn are amongst the natural prey of Paramites.

Paramites have appeared in the first three Oddworld games, with diminishing roles in each, but maintain a high profile and popularity amongst fans.

Biology
Distribution and habitat
Paramites are native to the Paramonian Forest of Mudos, where they are now locally virtually extinct because of over-hunting and habitat loss to industrial deforestation. Wild Paramites can still be found living in large herds across the rest of Mudos. They are particularly successful in areas that have both forests and caves, such as the Wilderness Region, as they are nocturnal creatures that sleep in caves during the day.

Within Paramonia there is a sheltered population of Paramites that nest in the Paramonian Temple. Their survival here shows that industrial forces have only had limited success in penetrating the temple’s defences, despite no current Mudokon habitation. Another protected population was recently discovered when the excavation of Necrum Mines reached the Mudomo Vault.

Physiology
Paramites are moderate-sized creatures, standing 3 feet (1 m) tall and 4 feet (1·5 m) long, and weighing 50 pounds (20 kg). They are tetrapods with muscular forearms that provide power for running, leaping, and climbing webs, and smaller, stabilizing hind legs that also act as spinners. Paramites are very agile, able to run up and down vertical rock surfaces and webbing, leap long distances, and jump upwards. Paramites can spin webs from their rear end, creating ropes they can nimbly ascend and descend.

The most distinguishing feature of a Paramite, is the array of six bony, finger-like appendages surrounding their mouth, like pedipalps, which give it a unique profile. Paramites thrash them to kill prey and defend themselves against predators, doing damage either by bludgeoing or impalement. This attack is enough to kill a Mudokon or shred a Fleech.PVP7C8&9 & P11C02&4 They are also used to grasp objects such as ring pulls, to draw food into their mouth, and as visual gestures.

Senses
Paramites have no eyes, but sense other creatures by electroreception with their brain’s glands. In Abe’s Oddysee and Abe’s Exoddus they can be heard sniffing whenever at rest, indicating they rely on a sense of smell. They also communicate verbally, implying they can hear. Interestingly, Paramites do not attack Abe when he is granted invisibility by Mudokon spirits, but they do react to his motion by rearing their heads as though confused or irritated.PVP10C5&6 & P12C3&4

Paramites are made greatly uncomfortable by Mudokon chanting, responding by tensing up and hissing loudly, but it is not known whether they are reacting to changes in electromagnetic fields that can be theorized to be associated with chanting, or just the sound of the chant.

If you scratch a Paramite in just the right place, it will kick with its hind leg before killing you.

Group behaviour
Paramites are very social and cooperative amongst themselves, able to graze, hunt and travel in large herds or smaller packs. There is little evidence of specialization or hierarchy within a herd, allowing it to operate no matter its membership. One nocturnal herd observed in the Wilderness Region was seen to have a kind of lookout, who hollered as the rest of the pack passed it.

Communication
Paramites have a complex system of audible communication, called ParamiteSpeak. The vocal sounds they can make include hissing, howling, rasping, squealing, and a kind of scraping squeak. They also grunt when grazing and gasp audibly when excited. These sounds are not only used to reinforce group sociality, but are part of an apparent vocabulary that allows Paramites to give instructions to each other, such as ‘Follow me’, ‘Wait’, ‘Work’, or ‘Attack’. They can also make a clicking noise by rubbing their facial fingers together, which is used as a greeting. ParamiteSpeak is indicative of Paramites’ social nature and problem-solving skills.

Paramites also use their facial fingers to provide visual gestures. When frightened, they will draw their fingers close to their body, but as a show of aggression they will also flare them greatly, possibly to increase their apparent size.

Diet and hunting
Paramites are pack hunters, and in aggregations of two or greater they will readily chase and attack prey, including Mudokons and Gabbits. Nearby Paramites will participate in such hunts without instruction. Paramites are such enthusiastic hunters that they are known to run into wallsPVP10C3 and land mines and off cliffsPVP13C7 when in persuit of prey.

However, when a Paramite is on its own it will not initiate an attack, and may even seem docile and curious. It will follow a traveller, such as a Mudokon, cautiously maintaining a short distance. A lone Paramite will only attack a Mudokon if it is backed up against a wall or cliff top. However, if the traveller follows the Paramite, it will find itself being led into a trap: a concealed Paramite aggregation, falling objects, rolling boulders, or swarming bees.

Dead, old meat seems to be much preferred by Paramites over fresh kill, and they will abandon a chase and run right past a Mudokon just to get to the smallest scrap of meat. Even holding a piece of meat aloft is enough to grab the attention of nearby Paramites, which will cause them to gasp audibly. Mudokons often use this to their advantage, to get past Paramites that would otherwise kill them. They placed hanging meat sacks throughout the Paramonian Temple and Mudomo Vault to aid travellers.

Paramites will eat Slurgs, doing so without bursting the Slurgs noisily.PVP1C3 & P9C2 They have also been seen rummaging in the grass of the Wilderness Region, whether combing for small animals or grazing the grass.

Interspecific predatory relationships
Paramites generally avoid other predator species of Mudos, namely Fleeches and Scrabs. Although Fleeches inhabit many of the same forests and caves as Paramites and may be active at the same time, the two creatures will not normally attack each other, as they both pose a risk to each other. Fleeches will only attack Paramites if they are cornered; Paramites will only attack Fleeches if told to by another Paramite.PVP7C8&9 & P11C2&4

Paramite and Scrab herds will battle each other if they come into contact, but this is normally prevented by the species inhabiting different environments (Scrabs deserts, Paramites forests) or, in shared territory like the Wilderness Region, being active during different times—Scrabs are diurnal, Paramites are nocturnal.

Reproduction
Paramites are a super species, the entire race’s reproduction being done by specialized queens, which have not yet been observed. If they are similar to Oddworld’s other super species, then all Paramites seen so far are asexual workers. Paramites build nests, which they line with webbing and are fiercely protective of, but it is not known whether their purpose is to incubate eggs, rear infants, or neither of these.

Evolution
Despite any similarity between Paramites’ facial fingers and Sligs’ tentacles, the two species are evolutionarily unrelated.

Paramites in other societies
Paramites in native society
Ancient Mudokon temples, rock paintings, and cults are dedicated to Paramites, who were once seen as sacred animals for their power and beauty, their place in the food chain, and their connection to the spirit world. The Paramonian Temple was built to honour the creatures, and today shelters the last remaining wild Paramites in Paramonia. This belief may have begun with the Mudomo tribe, who adopted Paramites as their emblem and introduced the creatures to the Mudomo Vault below Necrum to protect the bones of the noble deceased.

Mudokons rescued from slavery are rediscovering the reverence of Paramites, kept alive by holy natives, but will ultimately find that the religious attitude to the animals used by ancient cults will not satisfy their spiritual needs.

All the same, Paramites are a natural predator of Mudokons, who have developed practices for avoiding predation in their villages. The deadliness of Paramites is used as a rite of passage: Prophecy foretold that the Mudokon who survived the creatures’ nesting grounds in the Paramonian Temple would be the saviour of his people.

Paramites in developed society
Paramites are little more than a source of meat to the industrial races. RuptureFarms hunts Paramites, driving them into box cars to take to their abattoirs where they are processed into Paramite Pies, a popular item in the Tasty Treats line of novelty meat snacks. Paramite Pie adverts feature a green cartoon Paramite, ironically promoting the consumption of its own flesh. RuptureFarms 1029 has driven Paramites to virtual extinction in the Paramonian Forest, but Glukkons only lament this as an inconvenience to their profits.

Sligs use Paramite skin as parchment.

Production history
Paramites are inspired by a number of different animals and animal issues. As they are used by the Glukkons for food, they are inspired by creatures facing the threat of extinction because they are treated like an expendable natural resource, their storage and slaughter as livestock touching upon issues of animal welfare. Their appearance on Paramite Pie adverts is inspired by food mascots like Charlie the Tuna and Happy Meals: before he first came up with Oddworld, Lorne Lanning noted the absurdity of these mascots that apparently wanted to be eaten. Their relationship with Mudokons is inspired by real-world native cultures that worship wildlife, particularly in the belief that that wildlife has a natural connection with the spirit world that the natives themselves have lost.

More biologically, the social and hunting behaviour of Paramites is modelled on pack hunters like hyænæ, while their morphology is based off of spiders: their face fingers function as pedipalps but have a quality like spiders’ legs. They also spin webs. Unlike spiders, they live in eusocial groups with all reproduction handled by specialized queens, just like bees, termites and mole rats. Paramites rub their facial fingers together to make noises: this stridulation is most commonly associated with crickets and grasshoppers, but is also performed by goliath tarantulæ.

‘Paramite’ is a portmanteau of ‘parasite’ and ‘mite’, but during pre-production, Paramites were called ‘Arachnid Jr.’. The creatures were designed by Steven Olds, then physically sculpted by the Shiflett Brothers, Brandon and Jarod. This maquette was scanned and digitized to create the 3D computer models used for Abe’s Oddysee and Abe’s Exoddus.

A concept painting by Raymond Swanland for the Abe’s Oddysee feature film released by OddBlog in June 2009 depicts unidentified creatures swarming through what appears to be a burning factory. One of the creatures in the foreground displays a facial structure similar to a Paramite, suggesting these creatures may be Paramites redesigned to take advantage of higher CGI capabilities, something Lanning has said he will do with Oddworld characters.

Ridley:

Latamire Munch is a two‐year‐old Gabbit who has become highly involved in the efforts of Abe to bring peace and balance to Oddworld. Captured by Vykkers scientists, he now has an alien device screwed to his skull and is thought to be the very last member of his race in existence, save for 150 unhatched Gabbit eggs.

Physiology
Munch is a Gabbit, so has one flipper with an M‐shaped foot, two spindly arms, five fins and a head built like a torpedo that allows him to shoot through water with speed and grace. Although amphibeous, he is only awkwardly mobile on land because of his single leg, rendered particularly lame by a Scrab trap. His mouth is a large and gaping and fitted with two asymmetrical sets of teeth. These are sharp enough to inflict serious damage when he bites hard with his powerful jaws. Munch uses his fins and large, emotive eyes to express himself more than he speaks. The SkullJack surgically installed to his skull allows him to hijack machine technology and unlock animal cages. Its sonar can be used to track down Fuzzle cages, and it is capable of delivering an electric charge. When angered, his beneign expression turns to one of hellish fury.

Psychology
Like all Gabbits, Munch is a highly social creature and seeks companionship. Unfortunately, he is the last of his kind, so often turns to Fuzzles for friendship. The huge implications of his situation are far too grand for his young mind to consciously realise, so he lives in denial despite the overwhelming evidence of his race's extinction. To keep his mind from exploring this subject, Munch depends on company; thus, he has developed a severe phobia of being left alone. He is incredibly protective of his friends, and although he has a soft heart, he becomes ruthless when angered.

The effects of his abduction by creatures and technology completely alien to him has had a lasting effect on Munch’s psyche. The experience has left him open to bitterness and paranoia, but also much more determined in his efforts than he ever was before.

Story
Munch's Oddysee
Where once Munch had swam in the Big Pond with his family, he now found himself alone. He called out for other Gabbits, but never heard any reply until one night, when he was lured onland and into a Scrab trap that broke his leg. Once it was dark, Munch awoke to see lights approaching him through the forest. One floating vessel, a Vykkers Harvester, came up to him, an eerie shape watching down on him. Terrified, Munch passed out, and when he regained consciousness he found himself strapped to a seat with an alien device being screwed to his skull. A conversation between his tormentor Humphrey and his business partner Irwin revealed that he was the last Gabbit alive and destined to scour Oddworld for Fuzzles caught in traps to bring to the Vykkers.

When he was alone, Fuzzles offered to free Munch of his restraints if he released them. Eventually Munch found he could use his SkullJack to open their cages, and gratefully they chewed away his restraints. Using the deadliness of his new friends to eliminate Intern security, Munch worked his way through Vykkers Labs to its Poop Chute, and escape, little realising his altitude. He fell from Vykkers Labs, crashing into Abe, sending them both to the ground below. From there, Abe took Munch to see the Almighty Raisin, who claimed that their destinies lie together, and that they needed to regain access to Vykkers Labs. Although at first determined not to return, Munch changed his mind when told that the very last Gabbit eggs were being sold inside.

Taking the Raisin's advice, Abe and Munch travelled the wilderness, visiting Glukkon factories and emptying their funds into the bogus charity of Lulu's, then waited until he was invited to Vykkers Labs to sneak aboard Vykkers Labs hiding on his blimp. After rescuing the Fuzzles, Mudokons and Labor Eggs, Munch and Abe stole the can of Gabbiar from Lulu. In an act of vengence, Munch and the Fuzzles rigged explosives stolen from Vykkers Labs’ armoury to demolish the research facility, leaving Munch with 150 baby Gabbits to raise.

His primary mental aid is his powerful sense of morality, and in experiencing more and more of the injustices performed both against and by his people he attains the motivation and sheer dedication he needs to rise up to his rôle as the Mudokon messiah.

His large hands and feet make his step heavy and his posture poor, but he can expertly scale walls with his bare paws and leap almost gracefully between travel wells—?sometimes.

Since wildlife resources were becoming depleted, his boss—?Molluck the Glukkon—?decided to turn to a readily available source of meat, the Mudokon slaves that worked in the factory.

To be continued…

Munch's Oddysee
To be continued…

Accomplishments
Throughout his career as a revolutionary and saviour, Abe has performed many important deeds, including:

*Shutting down 1029, the Bonewerkz Mill, Magog Motors, Splinterz Manufacturing and Flub Fuels.
*Destroying Necrum Mines and Brewery 401.
*Preventing the development of a Meep Ranch, a Micro Brewery and Evenwurst Weenerz Co.
*Sending Molluck the Glukkon into hiding.
*Disrupting the industrial œconomy.
*Relighting the holy fires in the Paramonian and Scrabanian temples.
*Releasing Mudokon spirits from ghostlocks.
*Rescuing Mudokons from slavery, including unborn Mudokons.
*Uniting the freed workers and the native Mudokons.
*Winning the last can of Gabbiar at auction.
