The Annual Oddworld Forums Poster Awards are accolades given to members of the Oddworld Forums based on the votes of other members. The Awards were started in 2003 by Wolfpac, who ran the awards for their first five years. Wolfpac started the 6th Annual Awards but was unavailable to present the awards, so this was handled by Wired. Wired continued to run the awards until the 9th Awards. The 10th Awards were run by ScrabTrapMan.

Procedure

Two threads are used for each Awards: the first is used to announce the categories and inform members that they can now start voting, the second is used to announce the winners. Often a very basic narritive is used to introduce and conclude the initial post of each thread, typically taking the form of a fictional awards ceremony; earlier Awards use several Oddworld Forums members, and occasionally Oddworld characters, in these skits.

Once the categories are listed and, where appropriate, explained, members may begin casting votes either by posting publicly in the first thread, or by privately contacting the organizer. Although ideally each member will only vote for a single member in each category, this is not always the case, with two or three names frequently sharing a vote. In these cases, the member voted for will only receive a half or third of a vote.

Members are not allowed to vote for themselves or tell other members whom to vote for. They are also not allowed to disseminate progress updates based on public voting. Failure to follow the rules is punishable by removal of the member’s eligability to receive any awards that year. As of the 7th Awards, it has been made explicit that members are only eligable to receive awards if they have posted in the previous calendar year (with the exception of ‘Dearly Missed Member’ for which the rule is reversed).

Winners are announced in the second thread, which remains open for members to share their congratulations and thanks.

Winners

Eighty-two members have won at least one award in the Annual Oddworld Forums Poster Awards in the eight years they’ve been running. Two additional winners, Abbey and Bill Murray, are the only winners not to be registered members of the Oddworld Forums: Abbey is the daughter of OANST and Bill Murray was in Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day. Seven members have won more than ten awards in total:

Max the Mug is the only member to have won the same award, ‘Member with the Greatest Oddworld Knowledge’, for all tenyears. The next greatest consistency are members who have won the same award in four (not necessarily consecutive) years. Four members have accomplished this:

  • Alcar (Oddworld Forums Unofficial Mascot)
  • Splat (Best Writer)
  • Wolfpac (Best Thread Creator)
  • Xavier (Most Respected Poster and Most Dedicated Poster)

This also makes Max the Mug the only member to have won at least one award in all ten Awards; Alcar and Xavier have won at least one award in seven of the Awards. The most awards won by a single member in one year is six, an accomplishment shared by three members: Jacob in the 1st Awards, Nate in the 5th Awards, and Bullet Magnet in the 6th Awards. The member to have won awards in the greatest number of different categories is Hobo, who has won at least one award in nine different categories; Alcar, Bullet Magnet, Max the Mug and Nate are shortly behind with eight.

Winners are not given any actual award. However, of the eighteen winners of the ‘Member Who’d Make a Good Moderator’, seven went on to become moderators and one had previously been a moderator.
