Fan of the Month

Name:   Aaron B.
Location:   Dayton, Ohio USA
Age:   20 years old
Occupation:   Video Game Store Clerk
Favorite video game:  The Oddworld Series. Abe's Exoddus is probably my favorite
Hobbies:   Rhyme games, sitting at diners, wasting time on the internet
Favorite film:   Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa
Favorite food:  ... um ... meat.

Q:   When did you first become aware of Oddworld?
AB:  Leading up to fall '97 release of "Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee" game mags had ads for this game that had "no powerups, no weapons, just a loincloth". The character designs and the concept alone peaked my interest. Then they released "PlayStation Underground" which was a cd-rom video game magazine. I believe it was the second issue that had the Oddworld demo on it. That's when I fell in love.

Q:   When did you first become a "true" Oddworld fanatic?
AB: September 17th, 1997. The release of Abe's Oddysee. picked up my reserved copy from EB and locked myself in my room for a few days. My condition worsened when Exoddus came out as I began to save money to order Mudokon face boxer shorts and a plethora of mudoken face tshirts .... I never did ... now I can't get that stuff.

Q:   Tell us about your "Oddworld" tattoos. What prompted you to get each one?
AB: Sligs, naturally, 'cos they're evil personified, They let you relieve the pent up tension after spending time sneaking around as Abe, by blasting everything in sight.

Q:   Who is your favorite Oddworld character and why?
AB: Abe. The unlikely hero. He fell into his adventure by fluke. he's an everyday mud who did something extraordinary. and he's still modest about it.

Q:   What's your favorite environment?
AB: I don't know. i really liked the part In oddysee where Abe runs into the big gates with the giant Mudokon statues. it starts showing the nature of oddworld. the way its suppose to be. i don't know if its my favorite ... but being as how it was the first time I got to see the true depth of Oddworld I'll go ahead and say it is.

Q:   Who's your favorite bad guy?
AB: Mollock still. He started it. He's the "o.g." enemy glukkon.

Q:   Have you finished Munch's Oddysee?
AB: Loved it. Wasn't a fan of the "spooce", but the environments were gorgeous. And the cut scenes were amazing. I liked how all the old cutscenes from past games were on there too, so I made a tape with all the Oddworld cutscenes from all the games and I played it on loop at work (Funcoland) for a few weeks straight. Got alot of attention. Sold some copies of Munch because of it.

Q:   Is there anything you would like to say to your fellow Oddworld fans?
AB: Keep on being odd. Don't lose sight of what Oddworld is ... a world. Even if you don't like the game, or aren't a fan of a new character, just remember that its all part of a bigger picture. a world that lives, with many different species, environments, social classes ... all of it. That's what makes it great. It's like our world ... only odder. Plus don't ignore the stabs at our culture that are subtly present in each game.

Q:   If you could ask Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning one question, what would it be?
AB: Can I have a job? I make a mean pot of coffee. >   - The End
