Halloddween

In the month leading up to Halloween 2023, Oddworld Inhabitants posted daily parodies of film posters (mostly of films from the horror genre) renamed and edited with Oddworld wordplay and imagery. Originally described as ‘Oddworld Movie Mashups’, they were given the hashtag ‘Halloddween’ on multiple social media channels.

The posters were shared on the company's X, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and TikTok channels, as well as a select few that were shared on their new Threads channel. The full collection of parodies were posted on Oddworld.com at the end of the month, where the term ‘Halloddween’ was not used.

Several of the Halloddween posters were created by katiepops.

The campaign was a follow-up to the Oddworld Mashup series, and like it saw a number of fan-created submissions, although these weren't included in the main series and were reshared by Oddworld Inhabitants separately. Halloddween ran simultaneously with the Oddworld-Tober 2023 social media campaign.

Titles without art

Fans commenting on Oddworld Inhabitants' posts throughout Halloddween often replied with quotes and characters from each film given an Oddworld-based pun, but most frequently would suggest other parody titles without developing them into finished parody poster art. Predictably, some of these suggestions turned out to be titles that Oddworld Inhabitants would go on to share in a future post, or which had already appeared earlier in the campaign.

While most of these fan suggestions conformed to Oddworld Inhabitants' theme of horror films, some did deviate from the genre while some weren't even films. These are all included in the following list of fans' suggested titles. Some fans suggested original titles to be parodied without suggesting a title for the parody, while some fans suggested alternative titles for Oddworld Inhabitants' posters, neither of which are included in this list.

Response

Fan reaction to the Halloddween campaign varied. Many fans responding on social media platforms were delighted and looked forward to more entries.

I don't know who's coming up with these but I freaking love them!

The references to the movies are brilliant and the artwork is so good.

I have been enjoying these so much I wish they didn't have to come to an end.

last month was fun. some of the horror movie posters made me giggle and the abe-o-lantern was clever.

As noted above and acknowledged by Oddworld Inhabitants, several fans were inspired to create their own parody posters. However, there were fans who were critical of the level of effort being made by the Oddworld social media team.

In particular, the choice to tag celebrities unrelated to Oddworld was regarded with disapproval, and sometimes caused confusion.

I didn't even know that actress Linda Blair was a fan of Oddworld, which is pretty cool

Others felt that the use of popular media franchises was regrettable or ineffectual.

Some of them do get a chuckle out of me. It's a shame they're having to piggyback off other IP's to appease the algorithm.

It just kinda felt like an attempt at tying Oddworld into more successful IPs, even though said IPs had nothing to do with the series. I'm sure it was done with good intent and I'm sure there are people who found it fun, but as a whole it's nothing really meaningful for either people who are already fans of the series or people who are fans of whichever other IP that was referenced.

Despite all criticism, the format was enjoyed by many fans who hoped it would return in the future.

Sherry McKenna enjoyed the posters, saying ‘I have to admit they make my day as well.’ Oddworld Inhabitants stated that they enjoyed making them, but that it was a ‘silly’ campaign, adding that for the following month their social media would focus on gameplay.
