Prize-winning ecology artist
“Save Chicks in ’76” is the slogan on the award-winning poster picturing a mother duck swimming with her chicks, which won Lorne Lanning a top prize in a recent ecology poem and poster contest sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Lorne's poster was chosen from among thousands of entries in New England. He was one of 13 recipients in Connecticut to receive a plaque representing high honors. The awards were presented by Gov. Ella Grasso in a ceremony at the State Capitol.
Lorne enjoys drawing and sketching and has already decided on a future career in art. When he was in the Third Grade in Jonathan Trumbull School, Lorne won first prize in a poster contest. His sketches have been on display at the Meriden Public Library.
Now in the Fifth Grade, Lorne is the designated class artist, preparing art work for the bulletin board and for props used in plays. When his class at Roger Sherman School put on a Bicentennial play for the PTA last week, Lorne did the art work.
He lives at 139 Sunset Ave., with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Krawetz.
Lorne's prize-winning poster, pictured above, emphasizes the need to preserve a suitable environment for our wild life.
