Bunce-Edwards got an original PlayStation on Christmas Day 1997, and on Boxing Day 1997 played the <cite>Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee</cite> demo on the demo disc that came with it; he got the full game in the summer of 1998. It wasn’t until he recognized Mudokons in a magazine he was flicking through that he realized he was a true fan. He joined the GT Interactive Software message boards in 1998 with the username skELUMton to ask what a Greeter looked like (getting <cite>Abe’s Exoddus</cite> on Easter Sunday 1999), but along with the other regular posters moved to the Exoddus Club when activity on the GTIS boards died down, joining as billy_squeek on 12 February 2000.

Bunce-Edwards’s first attempt at a fansite was a 2000 webpage on Xoom called ‘The Kennels’. It took the form of a conjoined twin Glukkon called Glasp taking the reader on a tour around the Kennels, which hosted one of each Oddworld creature known at the time. By 2001, the project changed to one more formally encyclopædic in nature called ‘The Scrabacombs’, but by 2002 this was renamed to ‘The Oddworld Encyclopedia’ to reflect his Oddworld Forums nickname. Despite numerous promises that the site was coming, only an FAQ appeared (in 2003) before The Oddworld Encyclopædia finally launched in April 2006—although the April Fools’ Day joke articles were little appreciated by members of the Oddworld Forums given the site’s long-awaited appearance.

By this time Bunce-Edwards had already created OddBlog—originally a personal blog but quickly evolving into an Oddworld news blog—and had made plans to have it join with Xavier De Coster’s TOGG and Oddsville’s Oddworld Archives to form ‘The Shaman Network’. At the start of August 2011, Bunce-Edwards began working in the office full-time with the job title of Studio Coordinator. His usual tasks include monitoring of Oddworld fan communities, filing, watering plants and communicating with fans, job applicants, videogames press and potential merchandise partners. During the production of <cite>Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD</cite> he compiled the unlockable extras, contributed to the achievements and decided where to place the easter eggs. Although he had updated his Twitter and Facebook profiles to accurately identify his job with JAW, Bunce-Edwards did not declare his employment on the Oddworld Forums until 23 December 2011.
After Wil learnt that the Just Add Water office was located a short train journey from where he was living at the time, he and Xavier visited the office in <time datetime="2010-08">August 2010</time>, between OddTours 3a and 3b, and met Stewart Gilray. One of Wil's larger tasks at Just Add Water was to organize the many archived materials from Oddworld Inhabitants into a central file system. As Wil worked on this, he noticed that the archives didn't contain certain images (for example, concept art of Fong Foo) and recognized that the archives he had access to must be incomplete. He was later gratified to learn that The Lost Archives had been found. Because he didn't have much art to organize, he never needed to make local copies of it, and therefore not much of it is amongst the Oddworld files he kept long after he stopped working for Oddworld Inhabitants, which are mostly documents that were buried more deeply. Most of the images he still has are marketing material for <cite class="videogame videogame NewNTasty">New 'n' Tasty</cite>, or familiar pieces of concept art that were regularly sent to the press or merchandise companies.

During the production of <cite class="videogame StrangersWrathHD">Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD</cite>, he compiled the unlockable extras, contributed to the achievements, and decided where to place the RuptureFarms barrels (although Stewart Gilray and Liam Jones had to veto some of his suggestions). One morning in <time datetime="2012-10-08">2012</time>, Wil arrived at JAW Towers to find that his workspace had been decorated with sticky notes to celebrate his birthday. He once posted a ‘Rule 34’ fanart of Stranger on the office art boards, but was told to remove it.

Wil moved into the position of Community Manager following the redundancy of previous Community Manager Dan Morse. In this role, he maintained the Just Add Water and Oddworld Inhabitants websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts; coordinated with fans to provide community translations and other contributions; and attended gaming events, including E3 in 2014.

Speaking to Pocket Gamer, Lorne Lanning descibed Wil as ‘<q cite="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4XRupPJpg4">our biggest fan</q>’, whose role at Just Add Water was as an Oddworld subject matter expert for the development team to consult on matters of authenticity and consistency. He added that they had had ‘<q cite="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4XRupPJpg4">hours' discussions on Skype</q>’ about Oddworld, including questions from the fan community.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty
Wil was responsible for several references, puns and in-jokes in the updated presentation Molluck gives to the Glukkons in RuptureFarms at the start of <cite class="videogame NewNTasty">Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty</cite>. He also added several new LED screen messages to <cite class="videogame NewNTasty">New 'n' Tasty</cite>, some of which were copied from, modified from, or inspired by hourly announcements made on the Oddworld Dream community project to which he'd previously contributed. He also included a reference to Mr Ryce, a character from an unpublished Oddworld film script.

As well as contributing to the game manual, Wil also proposed a few extra cutscenes ‘<q cite="https://owforums.net/showthread.php?p=591712#post591712">showing more of Molluck's emotional journey</q>,’ and was given permission to script them. For this, he lifted ideas and scenes from early Oddworld film scripts. However, there wasn't enough time in the production schedule to include them fully.

He has said that he doesn't want to work professionally on social media again, describing online community as having evolved in a way he doesn't enjoy.

Wil Bunce-Edwards at OddTour 4b (2010)[1]

Wil Bunce-Edwards (born )[2], was a Community Manager for Oddworld Inhabitants from to and Studio Coordinator at Just Add Water from to . He is an Oddworld fan who has been active in the online fan community since . His screen names include skELUMton, billy_squeek, Max the Mug and Buncible.

Along with Xavier De Coster he co-owns Oddworld Library. Along with Xavier and Nathan Rose he was an administrator of the Oddworld Forums.

Oddworld fan

Wil Bunce-Edwards got an original PlayStation on , and on played the Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee demo on the demo disc that came with it. He got the full game in the summer of , and it was the fourth game he owned for the platform.[3][4][5] It was when he recognized Mudokons in a magazine that he realized he was a true Oddworld fan.[3][6][7] He joined the GT Interactive Software message boards in with the username skELUMton to ask what a Greeter looked like, and got Abe's Exoddus as a present on . When activity on the GTIS boards decreased, along with other regular posters he moved to the Exoddus Club, joining as billy_squeek on .[8][9]

From left to right: STM, Crashpunk, MeechMunchie and Wil at MudoCon (2012)[10]

Wil has attended several OddTours: OddTour 2 in Amsterdam, ;[11] OddTours 3a and 3b in London, ;[12] and OddTours 4a and 4b in London, .[13][1] He was also at MudoCon at Eurogamer Expo in as an employee of Just Add Water.[10]

Wil first appeared on Oddworld.com in [14] when three of his questions—about Raisin, the Meep Herder Village, and Alf's repeated disappearances—were in Dear Alf.[15][16] Wil joined Alf's Fan Club and Tea early and therefore received not only the ,[17][18] ,[19], and [20] Christmas cards from Oddworld Inhabitants, but also the batch of 1000 Munch's Oddysee stickers that were sent in .[21][22]

Wil's photo from his Fan of the Month interview (2002)[3]

Following the release of the Oddworld Map to Alf's Fan Club and Tea members,[23] Oddworld Forums members One, Two, Middlesboogie and Kesiah noted a few inconsistencies between the events of the games and the information on the map.[24][25] Using these as a basis, Wil compiled his own list of errors and corrections,[26][27] which at the suggestion and persuasion of Xavier,[28][29] and despite his initial reservation,[30] he emailed to Alf.[31][32] Because of this, he was selected to be made a Fan of the Month.[33] After previewing and approving the third version of the Oddworld Map,[34] his Fan of the Month interview was posted in .[3][35][36] He later provided the Fan Quote of the Month in for saying ‘I hate reading misinformed media.[37][38]

Oddworld Forums

Wil Bunce-Edwards joined the Oddworld Forums as Max the Meetle on ,[39] changing his screen name to Max the Mug when the Forums changed platform from ezboard to Ultimate Bulletin Board.[40] His screen name was changed to Wil near the start of ,[41] around the time he announced he was working at Just Add Water.

Wil began being called ‘The Oddworld Dictionary’ and ‘The Oddworld Encyclopedia’ at least as far back as .[42][43] The latter nickname became more popular, and was made Wil's custom title around ,[44] where it remained until .[45] After this, the name was used exclusively to refer to his fansite. However, his custom status remained ‘Oddworld Encyclopædia’ until at least ,[46] and ‘The Oddworld Encyclopædist’ until at least .[47]

Key Oddworld Forums features to which Wil contributed include Stranger's Wrath-themed user titles,[48] Oddworld-themed reputation levels,[49] and the final wording of the Forums' rules.[50] He joined the Oddworld Forums Discord in ,[51] and again on .[52] On , he posted the last ever post on the vBulletin Oddworld Forums.[53]

Member of staff

As part of the Oddworld Forums–Glass Asylum schism, Wil stopped posting on the Oddworld Forums in to move to The Glass Asylum,[54] but returned .[55] In this time, he missed the elections that resulted in Xavier De Coster becoming a moderator.[56][57] However, in he was elected to the position of moderator of General Oddworld Discussion and the Spoiler Forum by public vote.[58][59] He retired from moderatorship in [60] only to return as a Super Moderator of Zulag One in [61] In , he was promoted to the position of administrator, to complement Oddworld Library's new sponsorship by the Oddworld Forums.[62]

Community projects

Wil joined other members of the Oddworld Forums on Ajiellyn's Oddworld Dream on the online social gaming platform Furcadia, and contributed to its development by tidying up its code and refining the layout of the factory.[75] He was also a member of the Oddworld Forums Minecraft server,[76] and played the role of Molluck's assistant in DarkHoodness's recreation of the Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee intro cutscene in Minecraft.[77]

Oddworld Library

Left to right, Xavier De Coster, Sherry McKenna, Lorne Lanning and Wil at the first GameCity (2006)[78]

Wil's first attempt at an Oddworld fansite was a webpage on Xoom in , called ‘The Kennels’. It told a short narrative of a conjoined twin Glukkon called Glasp taking the reader on a tour around the Kennels, which hosted one of each Oddworld creature known to fans at the time.[79] By , the project changed to one more formally encyclopedic in nature, called ‘The Scrabacombs’,[80] but by this was renamed to ‘The Oddworld Encyclopedia’ to reflect his Oddworld Forums nickname.[81] In , Wil created OddBlog. Originally a personal blog,[82] by it had become a general Oddworld news site, and Xavier De Coster had joined as a reporter.[83]

Despite numerous promises that The Oddworld Encyclopedia was still being developed, only an FAQ was published (in )[84] over the next several years. TOE finally launched in , although the first set of articles were actually fakes created for , and Wil uploaded the real articles .[85][86] At the same time, ‘The Oddworld Library’ was also launched as the combination of OddBlog, The Oddworld Encyclopedia and Xavier's projects The Oddworld Graphics Gallery and The Oddworld Archives. The Oddworld Forums became a sponsor of the Oddworld Library in , and added a link to the fansite to the top of its banner alongside links to Oddworld-Web and Oddworld Universe.[62]

Among OddBlog's exclusive interviews, Wil and Xavier have interviewed editors Cathy Johnson and Mark Snoswell about The Art of Oddworld Inhabitants, and composer Michael Bross about Music From Oddworld Stranger's Wrath.[87][88][89] In , Wil and Xavier met Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna in person when they were attending the inaugural GameCity festival in Nottingham, UK, where Lorne was delivering his keynote speech, ‘The Appetite for Escape’.[78] OddBlog remained in contact with Oddworld Inhabitants and exclusively released several concept paintings for Citizen Siege and an Oddworld film.[90][91][92][93]

Just Add Water

After Wil learnt that the Just Add Water office was located a short train journey from where he was living at the time, he and Xavier visited the office in , between OddTours 3a and 3b, and met Stewart Gilray. Wil was invited back to the office in where he was offered the task of looking after the official Oddworld Inhabitants website and Facebook Page in his spare time.[95] After visiting the office a few more times, he was offered a job and began working in the JAW office full-time with the job title of Studio Coordinator from the start of .[95][96]

His usual tasks included monitoring online Oddworld fan communities; communicating with fans, job applicants, videogames press, and other companies including potential merchandise partners; stocking the kitchen; watering plants; and being the company's health and safety officer, fire officer and first aider.[95][97] Wil didn't announce his employment at JAW to the Oddworld Forums until .[95]

One of Wil's larger tasks at Just Add Water was to organize the many archived materials from Oddworld Inhabitants into a central file system. As Wil worked on this, he noticed that the archives didn't contain certain images (for example, concept art of Fong Foo)[98] and recognized that the archives he had access to must be incomplete. Most of the images he still has are marketing material for New 'n' Tasty, or familiar pieces of concept art that were regularly sent to the press or merchandise companies.[99]

During the production of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, he compiled the unlockable extras, contributed to the achievements, and decided where to place the RuptureFarms barrels (although Stewart Gilray and Liam Jones had to veto some of his suggestions).[95][100][101] One morning in , Wil arrived at JAW Towers to find that his workspace had been decorated with sticky notes to celebrate his birthday.[102] He once posted a ‘Rule 34’ fanart of Stranger on the office art boards,[103] but was told to remove it.[104]

Wil moved into the position of Community Manager following the redundancy of previous Community Manager Dan Morse.[97][105] In this role, he maintained the Just Add Water and Oddworld Inhabitants websites, Facebook pages and Twitter accounts; coordinated with fans to provide community translations and other contributions; and attended gaming events,[97] including E3 in 2014.[106]

Speaking to Pocket Gamer, Lorne Lanning descibed Wil as ‘our biggest fan’, whose role at Just Add Water was as an Oddworld subject matter expert for the development team to consult on matters of authenticity and consistency. He added that they had had ‘hours' discussions on Skype’ about Oddworld, including questions from the fan community.[107](1.21)

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty

Wil was responsible for several references, puns and in-jokes in the updated presentation Molluck gives to the Glukkons in RuptureFarms at the start of Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty.[108] He also added several new LED screen messages to New 'n' Tasty, some of which were copied from, modified from, or inspired by hourly announcements made on the Oddworld Dream community project to which he'd previously contributed.[109][110] He also included a reference to Mr Ryce, a character from an unpublished Oddworld film script.[111]

As well as contributing to the game manual,[112] Wil also proposed a few extra cutscenes ‘showing more of Molluck's emotional journey,’ and was given permission to script them. For this, he lifted ideas and scenes from early Oddworld film scripts. However, there wasn't enough time in the production schedule to include them fully.[113]

Oddworld Inhabitants

Left to right, Adam Savage interviewing Matt Glanville and Wil (2015)

After , Wil left Just Add Water and started working for Oddworld Inhabitants directly as its Community Manager. His responsiblities in this position included content creation for social media including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube; customer and technical support; liaising with distribution and merchandising partners; planning and staffing industry events; and recording promotional interviews and game footage.[97]

While in this role he wrote for the PlayStation Blog,[114], hosted a GOG.com livestream on Twitch,[115] and appeared on GINX.tv and Resero.[116][117] He also invited Crashpunk to JAW Towers to test the PC version of New 'n' Tasty.[118][119]

The last work he did for Oddworld Inhabitants was attending PlayExpo in Manchester, UK, in . Although he has not gone into details about the reason he left, he has described it as an ‘amicable split’ ‘due to circumstances at [his] end.’[120] He saw some early development of Oddworld: Soulstorm including the Slig Barracks and The Hijack (including the Slig Mama fight).[121][122]

Wil never visited the Oddworld Inhabitants studio, but stayed in possession of some equipment and display materials from working conventions,[123] as well as some files from Oddworld's archives.[99] Although he stopped being active in the public Oddworld fan community,[124] he stayed in touch with Alex Carroll,[121] Xavier De Coster,[125] and Manco.[126]

He has said that he doesn't want to work professionally on social media again,[127] describing online community as having evolved in a way he doesn't enjoy.[128]
